chalk privacy
EFFECTIVE 18 AUGUST 2026 · PLAIN ENGLISHchalk is a menu-bar utility that renames your screenshots and strips their leftover metadata, on your Mac, the moment you take them. It has no account, no cloud, and makes no network calls — there is nothing to opt out of, because there is nothing to collect.
What is collected
Nothing, and no account is required. chalk has no login and no server. Your settings — the folder you chose, your naming pattern, your counter — live in chalk's own storage on your Mac. Your screenshots never leave it, and chalk never sends them, their contents, or their names anywhere. The one-time Smart unlock is an Apple in-app purchase: Apple processes it under its own privacy policy, and chalk only checks whether the unlock is owned — it receives no payment details, name, or email.
What chalk can touch
Only the folder you grant it. You pick your screenshot folder in the standard macOS panel, and macOS confines chalk to it — it cannot read anywhere else on your Mac. Inside that folder it only reads and rewrites image files, in place, to clean and rename them; other files are never touched. With Smart naming on, chalk reads a screenshot's on-screen text using Apple's on-device Vision recognition, and can name a file by the app it came from — both entirely on your Mac, feeding only the new filename. Nothing is uploaded, and nothing is stored about it.
Where it lives
On your Mac. If your screenshot folder is one that iCloud syncs, those files are already in iCloud under your own Apple account — chalk adds nothing new there. When metadata stripping is on, chalk keeps a recoverable copy of the untouched original in your Trash as a safety net; empty the Trash and it is gone like any other file.
Analytics and ads
There are none. No advertising SDKs, no third-party analytics, no tracking identifiers, no profiles built about you. Nothing in the app is measured for anyone else's benefit.
Third parties
Apple only, for the App Store purchase, under Apple's own privacy policy. No one else receives anything, because chalk sends nothing to anyone.
Deleting your data
Delete the app and its settings go with it. Your screenshots are your own files and stay where they are. There is no online account to delete, because there never was one.
Children
The app is suitable for all ages and collects nothing that could identify a child. No age gate is required because no personal data is gathered in the first place.
The website
If you enter your email on chalk's page to hear when it ships, that email reaches my inbox and is used once — to send a single note when chalk is on the App Store. It is never shared, sold, or added to any other list. Ask me and I'll delete it.
Changes
If this policy changes, the effective date above changes with it and the previous version stays available on request. Material changes will also be noted in the app's release notes.
